Asking God for something…but what if He says no?

Do you ever get scared to ask God for something because you don’t want to know what the answer is? Or you’re scared it’s not going to be the answer you want?


Yesterday, something came up that I really needed to pray about. Thinking about it made my heart stop with fear and I knew I needed to stay strong and pray.

For some reason, sometimes I get scared asking God for things specific things, or for things with a clear answer, because what if God says no? What if something I ask for doesn’t come true? Will it make me doubt God or my faith? Truth be told, I’m scared of the answer. I know God has a plan with everything, but sometimes it seems easier to turn a blind eye to His will because it isn’t what I want. I don’t want a “lesson” or to “have to find the message” in the outcome if it isn’t what I’m hoping for. I just want God to make things okay.

But…I also know…

I can’t get through this without God. I need Him. And I know He’s listening. Philippians 4:6 says,

“Do not worry about anything, instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then, you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds all human understanding, and your hearts and minds will be guarded in Christ Jesus”

When I think about that verse, I am truly in awe and at peace. I wonder why I doubt God or why I would ever be hesitant to ask Him for something. God wants us to come to Him and to ask Him for things, He wants us to give Him our troubles and find peace through Him. The scripture goes on to say,

“I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Sometimes, the situation may not have the outcome we hope for. Sometimes God tells us no. Sometimes bad things happen. That’s where the trust and patience in God’s plan comes in. It’s not that God isn’t there in those situations. He is there in the help and the hope and the healing. He gives us the strength to deal with whatever life may send our way…

God does work miracles and it is okay to ask Him for things. We can trust in Him and have faith that God will give us what we need in some way or another. For now, all I can do is use the power of prayer and, to end on a good note, find comfort in knowing that God is there for us.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
