When God Says No

When God Says No

A continuation from, “There’s Something I Want, But What if God Says No?” (Plus, a story that will give you peace and hope).

Sometimes we ask God for things, and we pray about them really hard, and then they don’t happen.

In the first part of this post, which you can read here, I talked about how sometimes it’s hard to ask God for specific things because we are scared of the answer or of getting told ‘no’. I wondered if it would shake my faith if I prayed for something that I really needed and He did indeed say no…?

Well, God said no to me this time. And… I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit disappointed, but…it’s okay. It didn’t make me doubt God or doubt my faith (I don’t know why I thought it would.) The outcome made me sad, but I know in my heart that God does have another plan in store for me and I’m pretty at peace with that. It’s easy to want to doubt our faith or wonder why something is happening when we asked God for something else, but drilling those questions into our heads will make us go crazy…the answers just aren’t always there or apparent. It’s a lot easier to be angry at God than it is to truly trust Him and give thanks to Him in not just the good times, but the bad times as well. I think that’s sort of the point, though- having to have faith in God above all else, even, and especially, during the bad times.

I heard a story at summer camp one year that really moved me. If you’re at all going through something, and/or wondering where God is right now, bear with me, and I hope this story will help you the way it helped me when I first heard it.

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You’d walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”

He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.”

I wish there were clearer answers. But life is about living a journey. Everyone goes through hardships and it’s in those times that we just have to trust in God the most and know He will get us through it and then some.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good” Romans 8:28

My boyfriend did not get a job promotion today. I was sad for him. I loved the story. I cried a little bit. I am just praying that when the time is right, I hope God’s yes is much sweeter than His no today.

I only pray for peace, wisdom in decision making, strength for getting through certain situations. I’ve never believed in praying for specific things.

That’s true, that’s a great way to pray about things!! By praying for certain things I just mean sincerely hoping for one outcome, but you’re so right, it’s important to pray not just about the outcome, but how our heart reacts to it!

It’s certainly not easy when He says no! I try to remember that there is a plan but its sure not easy!
